Victoria’s tougher laws to crack down on illicit tobacco sales and ram raids have been welcomed by the Shopping Centre Council of Australia (SCCA).
The Victorian Government has announced it will introduce new legislation to strengthen enforcement against the sale of illicit tobacco, including closure orders and new powers enabling landlords to terminate the leases of violating vendors.
SCCA CEO Angus Nardi says the new legislative powers have proven to be an effective tool for shutting down illegal tobacco stores and supporting law-abiding, legitimate businesses.
“Our industry has developed a model legislative framework for lease termination, which is proving to be strong, clear and effective in other jurisdictions where it has been adopted.
“The Government’s proposed reforms will make a real difference on the ground,” he added.
The State Government has also commenced tough new laws and penalties for vehicle ram-raids, including upgrading ram-raids to an aggravated burglary offence.
Nardi said the law sends a clear signal that such dangerous and violent behaviour will not be tolerated, and that it has serious consequences.
“Vehicle ram-raiding is a frightening and dangerous crime that puts customers and workers in retail settings at risk and causes significant damage to property and businesses.
“Our industry welcomes laws that give Victoria Police stronger tools to help protect workers, customers and the community,” he said.
