David Simon, chairman, CEO and president of Simon Property Group, has died at the age of 64 after a battle with cancer.
Simon, who joined the family business in 1990 and became CEO in 1995 at just 33, transformed the company into the largest shopping mall owner in the US, with a global footprint spanning North America, Europe and Asia.
Under his leadership, Simon Property Group became synonymous with premium retail destinations, outlet centres and experiential shopping, while navigating major disruptions including the global financial crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic.
“On behalf of the entire board of directors, we extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the Simon family,” Larry Glasscock, non-executive chairman of the board, said.
“We are profoundly grateful for the privilege of having served alongside David, and we pledge to honor his extraordinary legacy by continuing to uphold the principles of excellence he embodied every single day.”
Following his passing, the company’s board has implemented its succession plan. Leadership has transitioned to Eli Simon as CEO and president, with Glasscock named non-executive chairman. The company confirmed that operations will continue without interruption.
