Work has officially commenced on a major $60 million redevelopment of Casuarina Square, the Northern Territory’s largest shopping centre, with owner Sentinel Property Group breaking ground on the transformative project on Monday, July 21.

The redevelopment marks a significant milestone for the Darwin retail landmark, which has served the local community since 1973. described the project as a long-term investment in the growth of both Casuarina Square and the broader Darwin region.

“Every man, woman and child in Darwin goes to Casuarina Square at least four times a month. It is at the heart of the community,” Ebert said. “This redevelopment will position the centre to meet evolving customer expectations and support the NT’s future growth.”

Key features of the redevelopment include:

  • Improved Woolworths Parking – Raising the main carpark on Trower Rd to the same level as the new Woolworths mall and the addition of permanent shade structures.
  • New Woolworths Supermarket fitout and new Woolworths mall specialty shops.
  • Woolworths Direct-to-Boot – Purpose-built infrastructure will enable online grocery orders to be delivered straight to customers’ vehicles — a first for the Northern Territory.
  • Revitalised Quarter – Enclosing and air-conditioning The Quarter to improve family dining experience.
  • New Quarter Dining and Entertainment Experiences – An expanded mix of retailers in The Quarter, offering more places to eat, play and be entertained.

Centre Manager Elysia Billingham said the redevelopment was designed with community experience in mind and will keep the centre fully operational throughout construction, which is expected to complete by mid-2026.

“We’re creating a more accessible, comfortable, and modern experience for our customers,” she said. “This redevelopment is about responding to Darwin’s growth and ensuring Casuarina Square continues to lead as a retail and social hub for the Top End.”

Located in Darwin’s north, Casuarina Square features 55,000m2 of GLA and more than 180 specialty stores. It draws consistently from a large catchment across Greater Darwin and includes major anchors such as Kmart, Big W, JB Hi-Fi, Coles, Woolworths, BCC Cinemas and Mecca.

The redevelopment is scheduled for completion in mid-2026, with Casuarina Square remaining fully operational throughout construction.
