Adelaide’s Rundle Mall is hosting a week of public events to mark 50 years since its opening as Australia’s first purpose-built pedestrian precinct.
Staring from September 1 to 6, the celebration, supported by funding from the City of Adelaide and the South Australian Government, features live music, free carousel rides, historical interactive displays, and an evening parade through the precinct on Friday, September 4.
An opening ceremony is set for 11am on September 1 at Gawler Place, with Premier Peter Malinauskas and Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith scheduled to attend alongside local event hosts.
As part of the milestone, David Jones and Adelaide Central Plaza have partnered with the mall to present Rundle Reflections, an art exhibition running through October 5.
Curated by Eddie Zammit, the display features commissioned works from eight South Australian artists alongside archival materials documenting the precinct’s history.
To support precinct retailers during the festival period, organisers are running a promotional campaign featuring $50,000 in gold bullion as a grand prize for shoppers spending over threshold amounts between August 31 and September 6.
Managed by the Adelaide Economic Development Agency (AEDA), Rundle Mall hosts over 700 retail and service providers, drawing an estimated 52 million visitors annually.
“Over the past 50 years, Rundle Mall has welcomed millions of visitors, from South Australia, interstate and overseas, but what makes it special is the individual stories and memories we all have of the mall,’ said Andrew White at Rundle Mall Adelaide.
