Developer Oreana has submitted a plan to the Townsville City Council for a new shopping centre for the city’s masterplanned community of North Shore.
Spanning 65,000sqm with 17,000sqm of NLA, the proposed centre on Market Street and the future Nexus Drive connection will feature a full-line supermarket, discount department store, three mini majors, 45 shops and a fresh food market. Retail tenants will be confirmed in due course.
The development will include critical infrastructure and unlock future precinct expansion for housing and additional commercial and community uses, the developer says.
Oreana MD Tony Sass said the centre, if approved, would be a “game-changer” and become one of Townsville’s most significant retail developments in years.
“This isn’t just another neighbourhood shopping centre – this is a major retail precinct that will serve as the commercial heart of one of Townsville’s fastest-growing communities,” he said.
“Beyond retail, the development of Nexus Drive is a critical piece of infrastructure that will unlock the precinct’s future potential. This enables us to deliver a mixed-use hub with the capacity to grow into housing, hotels and community facilities as North Shore continues its expansion.”
The company plans to open a new display village in mid-to-late 2026 to further support housing supply and Townsville’s growth.
“We have a clear vision for North Shore,” said Sass. “This shopping centre is a critical piece of that vision.
“We are not waiting for the community to be fully built out before delivering essential services. We’re planning ahead and building infrastructure in step with growth, so residents have what they need from day one.”
Spanning more than 900ha, North Shore is set to deliver about 5600 homes, a major town centre, schools, parkland and beyond upon completion. To date, around 2600 lots have been delivered alongside key retail offerings including Bunnings, Woolworths, Aldi and North Shore Tavern.
