Rundle Mall and Adelaide have reported record-breaking monthly and single-day spending for the festive season amid strong demand in retail, dining and entertainment.
Data from Adelaide Economic Development Agency (AEDA) reveals the mall’s monthly spending reached a record $158 million in December, spent by over 4.5 million visitors, marking a 4 per cent year-on-year increase. Its Black Friday shopping weekend has also helped inject $22.6 million into the city’s economy.
Executive manager Andrew White said the results were significantly driven by midnight trading.
“Over $23 million spent across three nights, up 7 per cent compared to last year.
“People came into the city, shopped, dined, and experienced everything Adelaide has to offer, supporting local businesses and creating record economic outcomes,” White said, stressing how the strip has become a “melting pot” of major South Australian events and festivals, entertainment and cultural moments.
Citywide expenditure in December also soared 5 per cent from 2024 to $430 million, contributed by 12 per cent growth in dining and entertainment. Meanwhile, discretionary spending rose 4 per cent and accounted for 68 per cent of the entire city’s spending.
The figures reflect strong confidence in Adelaide’s economy, AEDA chair Steve Maras said.
“Whether it is enjoying a cold beer at the cricket or retail therapy in Rundle Mall, the city offers something for everyone.”
Rundle Mall recently kicked off a year-long program of events and activations to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
